Hub gears are a brilliant design, incredibly reliable and simple to use. Typically they need very little maintenance, as the system is mostly concealed away from the elements inside the hub. Most people are happy to use their bike for years without servicing them. So when is it a good time to service a geared hub? We've found that most hubs benefit from a rebuild if they have been running quite noisy or sticking between gears. Some Shimano hubs have recommended service intervals.
